This week's issue of Entertainment Weekly has a full-page article on Vince Russo by Kristen Baldwin. Al Isaacs was actually quoted in the article, and there are a few interesting tidbits in there. Among them:

  • Russo has a development deal with Greenblatt Janollari Studio for a Larry Sanders-style comedy about wrestling (the concept is being shopped to networks). "The name of the show is Rope Opera," says Russo, "because that's what this business is.
  • When the WWF launched the wildly successful Smackdown! "There was never talk of more money," says Russo. "This was what was expected of me." Worse, he says, was the lack of credit for WWF's crossover success. "To see every magazine and TV show and hear how [WWF owner} Vince McMahon was the creative genius, that starts to wear on you."
  • Says Jim Byrne, senior VP of marketing: "Vince Russo's departure will have absolutely no effect on this company at all. None."
  • To combat WCW's image as a home for over-the-hill wrestlers, he's asked headliners Ric Flair, 50, and Hulk Hogan, 48, to stay on the sidelines for a few months. "There's a role for these guys in this business," Russo explains, "but it's not in the main event.
